There are simply too many corresponding new hire tasks to track to trust the steps to memory. Therefore, it’s helpful to create and maintain an onboarding checklist. Remember, though, such a tool is never really complete. Instead, approach such a guide as a living document that’s adjusted as the organization’s needs and workflows require.
For an onboarding checklist to prove most effective, ensure that it is created collaboratively between members of both the IT and HR departments. Neither department, by itself, can properly build such a checklist. IT doesn’t always understand or appreciate the nuances of various HR forms, including employment, government, policy and procedure and 401(k) enrollment documents. For its part, HR doesn’t always comprehend the variety and complexity of all the elements — including Active Directory configuration, VPN setups, equipment requisitions and telephone considerations — IT must administer.
