    Intermittently losing internet connection

    by zedsdead1997 ·

For the past week I have been losing internet connection intermittently on my desktop computer. Maybe every 3-10 minutes it will occur, and the loss of connection will only be for one or two seconds. Obviously, this isn’t a massive issue, but as I play a lot of online multiplayer games the loss of connection has become a very annoying issue as I keep getting kicked from games because of this.

I have verified that my ethernet cable is plugged in properly (CAT 6 ethernet cable). I have also replaced the cable with a new one altogether and still having this issue. I have tried resetting my modem/router and the issue remains. I have even traded out my modem/router with a new one through Xfinity, assuming the issue might be solved by doing so. The issue still remains.

The WiFi connection seems to not take this intermittent hit, as when I’m streaming TV shows, there’s no loss of connection. This issue is also occurring at various times throughout the day, so I am assuming that heavy internet use in my area is not part of the problem either.

My desktop is a very new gaming PC that I built myself. The ethernet cable is plugged directly into my motherboard (ASRock Z790).

This could be a difficult problem to diagnose…

but for a start, do you have access to another PC to plug the ethernet cable into and test the connection, see if it drops connections. If it does, then the problem probably is between your modem/router and your ISPs hub. If not then we need to check your gaming PC. Check the power supply unit, make sure it is rated sufficiently for the workload, maybe even go for a bit more than is required. Then check the ethernet port connection itself, such as the network card if equipped, or if soldered onto motherboard may need a multimeter to check for shorts or bad connection.
That may get you started, if I think of other possibilities I’ll add a reply.

To test the connection: ping your provider with the following command: ping <URL> -t . Use ctrl-break to see statistics, ctrl-c to stop, With me, the time varies from 7 to 15 ms., with 1 exception (in 333 times) of 43 ms. When the connection is broken for 2 seconds, you’d see a max of 2000 ms. Try the same with a different PC or laptop.

      Some remarks:
      1. When streaming, the data is buffered, so you won’t notice a delay of a few seconds on your phone. I assume you stream on a phone or tablet and use WiFi for that, not cellular data.
      2. Try using a WiFi USB-stick on you PC. Does that lose connection also?
      3. How do know you lose connection? Any error message from Windows, or some message in the event log? What other symptoms exactly?
