In the Americas, they do no better than the Ambergris Caye-based Belize Chocolate Company, ranked Gold for Cocoa Butter and Silver for Cocoa Powder at the 2022 International Chocolate Awards for the Americas region.
Belize Chocolate Company, established in 2007, is a family-owned bean-to-bar artisan chocolate maker based in Ambergris Caye, owned by Chris and Jo Beaumont. They process direct trade organic cocoa beans from small family farms in Belize’s Toledo District. Their products include a range of 70% dark chocolate with inclusions, milk and white chocolate, handmade truffles and candies, chocolate beauty products and other value-added merchandise that they sell in their two chocolate shops in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.
The prestigious International Chocolate Awards founded in 2012 is an independent competition recognizing excellence in fine chocolate making. As the only fully independent international fine chocolate competition in the world, their aim is to support companies producing fine chocolate. By helping these markets grow and develop, they also aim to support farmers who grow fine cocoa. This year the Belize Chocolate Company decided to introduce its cocoa butter and cocoa powder which it uses in a variety of its chocolate products and drinks. The Americas 2022 competition saw a record number of entries from North America and Latin America and the Caribbean with more than 800 products submitted by 130 chocolate companies from 16 different countries.
