Lungarotti presents the 2016 vintage of its flagship wine, “the best red in Italy”
September 29, 2021 – Nominated by Gentleman magazine as “the best red wine in Italy”, Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio 2016 from Lungarotti is finally available at the best wine merchants.
Wine produced by the historic Umbrian winery for more than 50 years, this pure Sangiovese cru is appreciated for its extraordinary balance between power and elegance. Bottled only in the best vintages such as the 2016 harvest, which in Torgiano (a small village between Perugia and Assisi) has been one of the best of the last decade thanks to a mild winter with little rain followed by a hot summer with thunderstorms in August which made it possible to avoid water stress on the vines. Harvesting of the Sangiovese grapes from the vines of the Monticchio vineyard began on October 5 when the grapes reached the perfect level of ripeness.
The characteristics of the Sangiovese grape – the “king” of grape varieties from central Italy, vinified here as a single grape variety – are reinforced by the low yield per plant of the Monticchio vineyard, located on the slopes of Torgiano with perfect exposure, allowing the vineyard to express its unique qualities.
Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio 2016 is a harmonious wine with a nice balance. A long skin maceration at controlled temperature preceded the one-year aging in large 50Hl (1320 gallon) barrels and barrels, after which it matured for at least three years in bottle before leaving the cellars.
Its color is an intense and lively ruby red while the bouquet impresses with its notes of sweet spices alternating red fruits, sweet tobacco and cocoa. The flavor is elegant followed by a continuous fruity structure with an engaging freshness and delicate balsamic notes; a long persistence on the finish with pleasant and austere tannins. It goes perfectly with roasts, braised meats and aged cheeses as well as with dishes of the most refined international cuisine.
Acclaimed among the ten best Italian red wines for many years, it has reached the top of the best Italian red with the correlation of the scores of the most reliable Italian wine guides in 2021 (shared with Bolgheri Sassicaia 2017); Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio is the symbol of Umbria and its wine and wine tradition.

Wine Spectator), Lungarotti is a historic Umbrian winery founded in Torgiano by Giorgio Lungarotti and now run by his daughters Chiara and Teresa , assisted by their mother Maria Grazia and Giorgio’s grandchildren, Francesco and Gemma. Today, it totals 250 hectares of vines located in the Torgiano domain (230 ha, VIVA certification since 2018) and that of Montefalco (20 ha, cultivated organically since 2010). The viticulture practiced in both estates is based on sustainability and biodiversity with an emphasis on the development of indigenous grape varieties interspersed with international grape varieties.
